NYTimes: In a Digital Age, Students Still Cling to Paper Textbooks

I wonder if this is changing: “Students grew up learning from print books,” said Nicole Allen, the textbooks campaign director for the research groups, “so as they transition to higher education, it’s not surprising that they carry a preference for a format that they are most accustomed to.”

  1. I think it is changing. I feel like maybe the only general population still clinging to their books and dust jackets are little kids. I think picture books are still the go-to tool (though yes, that will change too: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/10/17/fashion/17TODDLERS.html?pagewanted=2

I think it's worth noting that every person who is a parent right now grew up with books, not kindles, so the above quote is also applicable to them, I think, and how they approach reading with their children even now.

As it turns out, people like my parents are seemingly the group most readily transferring to digital books:

if the kindle purchases are anything to go by.

I think it might be one more generation before college kids feel more familiar with digital books than with book books... blegh.
