MCA PODCASTS...

...are super terrific!  Check them out!  The Tuyman's episode has Luc Tuymans explaining the show! That is helpful.

The audio editing is terrible.  Don't use that as your standard!  :)

Video from BBC News: Cyber art holds a mirror to the modern world

Cyber art holds a mirror to the modern world

NYTimes: In a Digital Age, Students Still Cling to Paper Textbooks

NYTimes: In a Digital Age, Students Still Cling to Paper Textbooks

I wonder if this is changing: “Students grew up learning from print books,” said Nicole Allen, the textbooks campaign director for the research groups, “so as they transition to higher education, it’s not surprising that they carry a preference for a format that they are most accustomed to.”

TOMORROW (Tuesday) @ HPAC: Chicago Artists and Social Media Panel Discussion

Here's the facebook event page.

How are artists in Chicago using social media platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare and Gowalla, to connect with the local art community, including fellow artists, collectors, members of the press, and the international art world? How has social media changed art creation and communication?

This panel discussion builds on our spring 2010 panel, which addressed social media in Chicago’s art institutions. It will be co-moderated by Ginny Berg, Publisher of Chicago Gallery News and art critic and social media consultant Alicia Eler. Artist Panelists include Annie Heckman, James Jankowiak, Judd Morrissey, and Jason Salavon. This panel is hosted by the Hyde Park Art Center.

Panelists and audience guests are encouraged to chime in live on Twitter before, during and after the panel: #socialmediaartists (http://twitter.com/#search?q=%23socialmediaartists)

Powerpoints...bad?

Why we hate Powerpoints...
An article that startswitha discussion about the military's overuse of powerpoints, but ends up in a pretty good dicsussion about general presentation strategies and what makes for a good and a bad presentation (powerpoint or otherwise). You're all of course well beyond the limitations of Powerpoint already and Prezi Pros, so feel free to look down on these poor saps still shackled to windows and microsoft office.

Webinar on Museums & Technology MON, OCT 18

Discussing the 2010 Horizon Report: Museum Edition

A few weeks ago, MIDEA released the 2010 Horizon Report: Museum Edition. This watershed edition of the annual Horizon Report series is the first of a new annual series that MIDEA will produce in partnership with the NMC.  Each edition will consider emerging technologies as they may be uniquely applied in museum settings — and the constraints and opportunities that each affords.
Please join the editors of the 2010 Horizon Report: Museum Edition online October 18th at 11am PT / 1pm CT (check for local time) for a MIDEA Connect webinar discussing the museum report. Larry Johnson and Holly Witchey will be on hand to discuss the findings with a focus on the key trends and challenges for museums.
To participate in the event, please visit the sign up page at http://go.nmc.org/midea-connect-signup.  You will subsequently receive login instructions.

We hope the report will spark discussion among museum leaders, practitioners, and staff about how cultural institutions might think about emerging technology.  The new report identifies and describes six emerging technologies that are likely to have a significant impact on museum education and interpretation over the next five years.  Also included are the major trends driving and challenges impeding their adoption. Each highlighted technology is examined from a practitioner’s perspective, and the discussions include sections on relevance to museum education and interpretation, benchmark projects incorporating the technologies, and key readings intended to allow interested readers to learn much more.
The electronic version of the report, which has been released under a Creative Commons license, is available for download at http://www.nmc.org/pdf/2010-Horizon-Museum.pdf.  Please feel free to copy or distribute this version broadly.
This event is free and open to the public. Please forward this invitation to your colleagues. The  Edward and Betty Marcus Foundation sponsored the report and the upcoming webinar. We thank them for their generous support.

TED Talks

If you haven't come across them yet, TED talks are a fascinating series of online lectures/talks that originate from conferences held periodically and at varying sites (though primarily Long Beach and Palm Springs). They're often fascinating, and in that way where you know they've hit the big time are often reposted on Facebook. HEre's the link:

And one of my all-time favorites of course has an education slant:

Post about museum dialog from Museum 2.0

This post from Museum 2.0 is an interesting report on one museum's attempt to promote authentic dialog.  It makes me wonder if there is a high-tech equivalent for such a program.  Do we need the physical object to create the same sense of connection?

Hang on-- I ♡ HELVETICA

And did you know there was a "web font space"? I did not.

Fonts.com Web Fonts joins a growing list of web font services, including Typekit, Fontdeck and Google’s (Google) new Font Directory. Fonts.com Web Fonts is similar to some of these existing solutions, but it has some additional features and supports a few other platforms that make it a unique offering in the web font space.

Apps as Tour Guides Through New York Museums, Step by Step

From the New York Times

Most institutions have not yet created a mobile app, but as a group, museums are headed in that direction. In the last few months, free apps were released by the Museum of Modern Art and the American Museum of Natural History, in New York; the Los Angeles Museum of the Holocaust; and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (which also has an Android app).

The Getty asks big-name contemporary artists to write curricula

While fun— and a wonderful statement about the importance of the work of teaching and learning to have such *famous* artists working on this project— to me, these lessons are lacking something.  Perhaps I’m missing the intellectual rigor I have come to expect from these individuals. Perhaps these lessons reveal something about the artists’ own histories of education. For example, take Kerry James Marshall. With all the social issues he engages up front in his work, his lesson is a pedestrian one about the mechanics of drawing.

The Getty also doesn’t showcase any teacher-generated content which looks to be a field-wide problem.

Take a look & see what you think.
